Family Reads - April-September 2024
Sharing some of what we've been reading as a family. You can also see my post from earlier in the year.
Book
I Love Me by Sally Morgan & Ambelin Kwaymulina (Fremantle Press)
This is a lovely book by mother and daughter duo Sally Morgan and Ambelin Kwaymullina. It's a simple story detailing all the things the two children in the book love about themselves (curly hair, 'the way my feet splash' etc). We love the vivid illustrations and the kid loves yelling out I LOVE ME as we read along.
It's also on my Body Affirming Kids Books tag (a bit of a work in progress at the moment).
E is for Echidna by Bronwyn Bancroft (Hardie Grant Children's Publishing
Bronwyn Bancroft is an illustrator I've loved for a while, and so we have quite a few of her books. At the moment the kid is a bit obsessed with these board book ones, generally gravitating towards E is for Echidna specifically but she does also enjoy Bancroft's other ABC and 123 books.
Going On A Bear Hunt by Michael Rosen, illustrated by Helen Oxbury (Walker Books)
Talk about obsessed, between multiple library borrows, watching the animated version whenever it comes back up on the ABC Kids app, and listening to the song on repeat ("Play School Bear Hunt! No Wiggles Bear Hunt"), my kid sure does love a bear hunt.
This Baby, That Baby by Cari Best and Rashin Kheiriyeh (Penguin Random House Australia)
Absolutely delightful book about two babies who live opposite each other, and are quite different. There is an underlying rhythm that exasperated parents might relate to, without disparaging the wonder. We read this book repeated until it had to be returned.
Lucy's Book by Natalie Jane Prior, illustrated by Cheryl Orsini (Hachette Australia)
I actually got to look over this picture book during an internship at Hachette, and it started my love of Cheryl Orsini's illustrations. We love this story, even though the kid is probably a bit younger than the intended audience. She particularly loves looking at all the book covers. Makes me happy to see how she loves a book about books, like I do.
Parents:
You can see what I read each month on StoryGraph.
Disclaimer: This is a way to share a few different books we've enjoyed. I am hoping to do a similar post each month. We also read a lot of the same books over and over, so I will only be sharing books I've not posted before and that we all enjoyed. But I want to be transparent, my child also likes to insist on reading the same books repeatedly. Sometimes those books are very boring. However your family reads is great.
Other recommendations I've posted for board books include my wrap ups of our favourite books for 0-3 months, 3-6 months and 6-12 months last year.
